Omaha Steak – It’s a Family Affair

Started by immigrants from Latvia in 1917, Omaha Steak began business under the name “Table Supply Meat Company.” The father and son team of what would one day become Omaha Steak, arrived by train on their way from Ellis Island, stopping in Omaha, Nebraska for the sole reason that the landscape, as seen from the train, reminded them of their Riga, Latvia homeland.

J.J. and B.A. Simon, the father and son business partners of what would someday become Omaha Steak, formed the Table Supply Meat Company after several years of working for other meat processing companies. The somewhat-odd name of their company came about because of the previous business’ remaining sign on the first building they bought: Table Supply Company. B.A. simply had the word “Meat” inserted between “Supply” and “Company,” saving considerable money on signage.

Excellent meat and gourmet food products, in addition to superior customer service, eventually brought Table Supply Meat Company to the pinnacle of success in the meat business. In 1966, as growth continued to spiral upward for the company, a new era began. New facilities were constructed and the company was christened with a new and far less odd-sounding name: “Omaha Steak.”

Today, Omaha Steak sells to more than a million and a half customers worldwide. Its phenomenal growth makes it the United States leader in the direct-response marketing of top-of-the-line beef and other meat products, as well as gourmet items. One key to its growth was in its installation of a free call service to its customers in 1979. Omaha Steak was one of the first companies in the US to offer a toll-free customer service telephone line.

More unprecedented business growth occurred in the 1980s and 1990s, fueling an even greater expansion of business facilities for Omaha Steak. But despite its size and success, the company continues on with its traditional commitment to excellence – as begun by the company’s founders in 1917. With no end in sight, the company and its fourth- and fifth-generation founder descendants continue to focus on the quality and customer service that goes into Omaha Steak.
